A Few Tips for Buying Maternity Bras

A Few Tips for Buying Maternity Bras

So funny story. A while back I received some bra samples from WonderBra. They were all lacey and really pretty but unfortunately I was too small to fit in them. Slightly embarassing I know, but I’m being

completely honest here. I couldn’t just throw them away so I set them aside hoping that one day I’d “grow” into them. Wishful thinking I guess…

Well, fast forward a couple of years…After a few months into my pregnancy I outgrew my usual bras. And that was when I remembered the WonderBras I had stowed away. I was so thankful to have them because we were under a serious lockdown. I was also grateful at avoiding another maternity related expense for only a few months use. So I dug them out and tried them on…the WonderBras fit like a dream! So the funny thing is, it only took me being pregnant to be able to fit in them lol.

All that being said, I never realized just how important comfortable and maternity appropriate bras were during pregnancy. I learned a few things along the way and wanted to share them in the event the information can help any of you.

First, you do not need to specifically go out and buy maternity bras. You can wear a regular bra so long as it is comfortable and preferably with a bit of stretch.

Secondly, it is best to avoid bras with an underwire. The reason you want to avoid a bra with an underwire while pregnant is that it can lead to constricted or even plugged milk ducts. Also a reason why the bra should be comfortable and not too tight. Both underwires or tight bras can lead to issues with duct flow and milk supply so it is best to avoid them. Personally I found the underwire would dig in too much while the wirefree styles were much more comfortable.

To be completely honest, while cooped up in the house during Covid lockdown for the most part I don’t wear any bras. However, they are necessary for the trips to the grocery store and going to the doctor’s office. I can’t even tell you how the WonderBras came in handy and saved the day – and continue to do so.

Since then (and me being able to fit into a size now), WonderBra has been kind enough to send me a couple more samples from their current lineup. So naturally I opted for some wirefree styles that I’m sharing in this blog post.

The first style I opted for is a wirefree lace style. What I really love about this bra (aside from the fact that it is very comfortable) is how high the lace detailing sits along the bra. Being pregnant most days I’m too exhausted to put a lot of effort into getting dressed up. And with the high cut lace it gives me that pretty peekaboo lace with almost any tank or top that I wear for a truly effortless trendy and romantic feel. (You know I loved wearing my lace bralettes before I got pregnant).

The second style I opted for was a seamless style in the galactic red. I was immediately drawn to this style because at first glance I knew it could double up as a sports style crop top. It is beyond comfortable and offers the ultimate stretchy comfy fit. And bonus that I can wear it as a crop top with maternity leggings for around the house.

  1. They are cute bras! It’s so important to have a good supportive bra for pregnancy, and to get the right kind of one as things can change so much! i got fitted for bras with my pregnancies and I made sure to get breastfeeding ones so I could use them afterwards too. They were extremely comfortable too which was nice 🙂

Hope that you are having good weekend. It’s a wet long weekend here.
