Getting the Most out of Working from Home

Getting the Most out of Working from Home

So I guess by default I’m now what you would call a full time blogger. It actually sounds surreal to say that, tbh.

Being such a creature of habit the most frustrating thing for me since losing my job has been keeping up a

consistent routine. As such, I’m finding it rather difficult staying on top of tasks while working from home, constantly getting distracted by random things.

By no means have I figured it out, but I’m attempting to put together somewhat of a routine for working from home. I find that I get overwhelmed all too easily by my to do list, panic over it, and end up getting nothing done. So in an effort to curb aforementioned panic, I’ve started to:

Start the day off with a cup of tea/coffee and plan the day.

This helps me to relax while planning the day. A great way to ease anxiety is to figure out goals/tasks for the day and plan them out. Most days I become overwhelmed by my to-do list. However once I assign time frames to each activity and plot them out on a daily planner I realize that I have more than enough time to get them ALL done. More importantly, whenever I don’t plan tasks out on an hourly schedule my anxiety takes over. And then I spend more energy worrying about time going by too fast instead of actually getting things done.

Get dressed as if  you’re going to work.

I know this may sound silly. It even somewhat contradicts the whole notion of working from home. But I will tell you this…I am so much more productive on days when I wake up as if I had a regular job to go to and get dressed for it. By rolling out of bed and throwing on a pair of sweats the day gets off to a laid back lazy kinda start. No bueno. Although I’m sure it’s purely psychological, there’s something uplifting and motivating about putting yourself together “for work” even if you are working from home.

Working from the couch, or bed…one of the perks from working from home right?

Although it’s fun working off the couch I tend to try and avoid it. When I get too comfortable I find myself drifting away from work to social. Next thing I know I’ve wasted an hour on Twitter and nothing has gotten done. Also, opt for ergonomic vs comfort. While a couch is comfy it can quickly turn into a potential distraction. Hello Netflix and nap time. Not to mention the potential musculoskeletal injuries that may happen as a result of improper seating/posture while working.

I’m looking forward to nailing down a solid working from home routine and would love to hear any suggestions you may have. Until then, it’s small steps towards regaining productivity in the meantime.

Have a wonderful rest of the week!

  1. Yes working at home has it’s pros and cons. I went to school for graphic design and the school I went to was very strict and it really taught you discipline. So I am pretty good at this.
